Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Government of The Gambia has officially launched the 2024 Groundnut Trade Season, which began on Monday, 2nd December 2024. The season, set to run until 2nd March 2025, maintains the market price of D38,000 per tonne.

Explaining the status quo in comparison with last year, a press release from the government’s spokesman states that “This price is notably higher than rates offered in other countries within the subregion“. This, according to him, demonstrates The Gambia’s commitment to enhancing agricultural profitability.

This year’s opening aligns with the government’s tradition of beginning the groundnut trade season on the first Monday of December. The Ministry of Agriculture assures that, in collaboration with key stakeholders, it had undertaken early preparations to ensure a successful trading period.

In the government’s press release, Ebrima G. Sankareh, the Spokesperson and Presidential Adviser on Diaspora Affairs, encouraged all stakeholders, including farmers, buyers, and transporters, to collaborate in making agriculture a rewarding endeavor.

The government emphasized its multiple initiatives aimed at improving the sector and fostering economic growth.

The commencement of the groundnut trade season is a crucial event for the agricultural sector, which forms the backbone of The Gambia’s economy.

The farmers are yet to react on the government’s pricing.

If favorable to them, one could expect significant participation, boost farmer incomes, and contribute to national development.
