The Albera Salut Foundation of Peralada together with another NGO “With Your Hands”, recently donated an electrocardiogram machine to the Farafenni Hospital in Gambia. This device is a significant milestone as it includes a screen that allows doctors in The Gambia to efficiently diagnose heart attacks and coronary heart disease, a capability they did not have before.
The Albera Salut Foundation has demonstrated a constant commitment to improving living conditions in several countries, including Ukraine , Morocco and now The Gambia, by donating medical equipment.
Saving lives
In The Gambia, a second health project has been carried out with the Maternity Hospital of Clínic de Barcelona, to save the lives of babies born prematurely in The Gambia. The Clínic has provided three CPAP machines for premature newborns, which help keep their airways open to oxygen supply. “Aminata” is the name given to this initiative.
“The project is a notable success, since the first girl connected to the respirators and who gave the project its name, Aminata, has experienced a positive recovery thanks to this equipment.”
As detailed by Milton Sánchez , referent of Amb les teves mans, “Aminata, a brave fighter, is evolving very favorably thanks to the CPAP devices and the care of the team that went to Banjul. Milton was in charge of setting up the machines and trained the Gambian health personnel.’ For the association, “the fact that this little girl was saved already justifies all the effort”.
The association now intends to carry out this initiative in the long term and extend it to other countries in Africa that have premature wards.
Kangaroo method
In addition to the devices, the premature baby support project incorporates the Kangaroo Method which involves parents, including Gambian parents, spending close to the heart skin to skin time with premature babies. This practice has proven to be beneficial to the Maternity Hospital of the Clínic de Barcelona.
“With your hands”, an NGO established in 2016, has carried out several humanitarian projects in areas such as Greece, Gambia, Ukraine and other places. In addition to international initiatives, they have also launched local projects to help seasonal apple workers in Sant Pere Pescador and to protect women who are victims of gender-based violence in emergency and emergency situations. Their commitment to improving people’s lives is their reason for existing, they emphasize from the association.
