Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Golden Era Party (GEP) has officially merged with the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), consolidating their political structures under a single platform as part of a renewed drive for national development and political relevance.
The merger follows weeks of negotiations between the two parties, with negotiators highlighting the complementary strengths each brings to the alliance.
While the GEP is said to command a strong support base in urban areas, the PPP is widely known for its long-standing grassroots presence in rural communities. Party officials believe the unification will broaden their electoral appeal and strengthen their capacity to effect meaningful change.
Under the terms of the merger, the unified organization will operate under the PPP banner. Saikou Sawo has been named president and flag bearer of the party, with Nene Cheyassin Secka serving as vice president. Ousman Madikay Faal retains his position as party leader and secretary general. According to party sources, the leadership arrangement reflects a balance of experience, inclusivity, and a shared strategic vision.
In a joint statement announcing the merger, the unified party rejected what it described as divisive politics, including tribalism and “empty rhetoric.” The leadership instead reaffirmed its commitment to unity, accountability, and people-centered governance.
Looking ahead, the PPP says it will prioritize policies focused on economic growth, social welfare, and good governance. President Sawo has outlined a vision of transparent and inclusive leadership that values citizen participation irrespective of background or political affiliation.
Party officials describe the merger as the beginning of a new political direction anchored in discipline, purpose, and collective responsibility, positioning the PPP as a vehicle for national renewal and a more inclusive political landscape.
