Gambiaj.com – (WASHINGTON, DC) – President Donald Trump on Tuesday escalated a growing diplomatic dispute with key U.S. allies by publicly sharing private text messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, underscoring his contentious push for the United States to assert control over Greenland.
In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump posted screenshots of what he said were personal messages from Macron and Rutte concerning Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Both leaders’ messages appeared to address Trump’s intensified campaign to bring Greenland under U.S. control, an effort that has alarmed European capitals.
Leaked Messages Expose Diplomatic Unease
In the message attributed to Macron, the French president opened with a familiar tone, “My friend,” and expressed alignment with Trump on issues such as Syria and Iran.
However, Macron also wrote that he did “not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” while proposing a G7 meeting in Paris after the World Economic Forum in Davos and suggesting he could invite leaders from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia to the margins of that gathering.
An Élysée Palace official has not formally commented on the authenticity of the message, but an unnamed source close to Macron told CNN that it was indeed sent by the French president.
In the second message Trump shared, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reportedly praised what he described as Trump’s accomplishments in Syria and committed to highlighting the U.S. president’s work on issues such as Gaza and Ukraine during engagements at the Davos summit.
Rutte concluded by saying he was “committed to finding a way forward on Greenland,” though no additional context was provided in the screenshots.
Trump’s decision to make these private communications public came amid heightened controversy over his Greenland agenda.
European leaders have openly criticized his demand that Denmark cede control of the island, with Macron denouncing new U.S. tariff threats as “unacceptable.”

Speaking to reporters in Miami, Trump reiterated his view that Denmark is incapable of defending Greenland, dismissing its sovereignty over the territory.
He also addressed a separate letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in which he linked his strategy on Greenland to not receiving the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, comments he reiterated while saying he did not “care about the Nobel Prize.”
The president then added, “First of all, a very fine woman felt that I deserved it and really wanted me to have the Nobel Prize. And I appreciate that,” he added.
This was in reference to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado’s decision to present him with her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal last week, even though the award is not transferable.
In what critics described as further escalation, Trump shared what appeared to be artificially generated images depicting himself planting a U.S. flag in Greenland alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as a map showing Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela as part of U.S. territory.
The move has drawn sharp reactions from European leaders and analysts who warn that Trump’s approach could strain NATO unity and transatlantic relations, particularly as world leaders converge at Davos this week to discuss global economic and security priorities. ([Reuters
