Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has granted a presidential pardon to 56 inmates under his constitutional prerogative of mercy, leading to their release from the Mile Two State Central Prison on Tuesday.
The Gambia Prison Service announced that the Head of State exercised his powers under Section 82 of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia to pardon the inmates, all of whom are male. The names of the released inmates have been disclosed for now.
According to prison authorities, the gesture underscores the President’s commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and the reintegration of offenders into society. The release is intended to offer the beneficiaries a second chance to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to national development.
Speaking during the release ceremony, the Director General of The Gambia Prison Service expressed appreciation to President Barrow for what he described as compassionate leadership.
He said the decision provides the former inmates with an opportunity for a fresh start after undergoing what he termed significant transformation during their incarceration.
The Director General urged the pardoned individuals to demonstrate genuine remorse through positive conduct, respect for the rule of law, and constructive engagement within their communities. He advised them to serve as role models and avoid actions that could lead to reoffending.
The Gambia Prison Service reiterated its commitment to rehabilitation and reform, emphasizing that its mandate goes beyond custodial functions to include preparing inmates for successful reintegration as productive and responsible citizens.
