Gambia, Azerbaijan Discuss OIC Chairmanship, Political Consultations, and Expanded Cooperation

Bayramov Njie

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie, and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, held a telephone conversation on Monday focusing on Azerbaijan’s upcoming chairmanship of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), alongside broader efforts to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

According to information from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Bayramov briefed his Gambian counterpart on preparations underway for Azerbaijan’s assumption of the OIC chairmanship, including key meetings and events planned under its leadership.

The OIC, which brings together Muslim-majority countries to coordinate political, economic, and cultural cooperation, represents an important platform for advancing shared priorities among member states, including The Gambia and Azerbaijan.

Minister Njie was also informed about Azerbaijan’s preparations to host the World Urban Forum later this year, an international gathering expected to address global urban development challenges and opportunities. The briefing forms part of Baku’s wider diplomatic engagement ahead of major multilateral events it will convene.

Beyond the OIC and international events, both ministers reviewed the state of bilateral relations and agreed on steps to operationalize the Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations signed between their foreign ministries last September.

They stressed the importance of launching formal political consultations in the near future as a mechanism to strengthen diplomatic engagement and coordinate positions on shared issues.

The discussion further highlighted the need to intensify political dialogue, encourage reciprocal high-level visits, and expand cooperation within international organizations.

Both sides expressed interest in using multilateral platforms to reinforce collaboration and advance common interests.

In addition, the ministers exchanged views on regional and global security developments, underscoring the importance of continued coordination on international matters of mutual concern.

The telephone diplomacy signals ongoing efforts by Banjul and Baku to translate their growing diplomatic ties into structured cooperation, particularly as Azerbaijan prepares to assume a more prominent leadership role within the OIC.
