The withdrawal of Ousmane Sonko from the electoral rolls was overturned today by the Dakar district court.
On Tuesday, the court heard arguments from Ousman Sonko’s and the State of Senegal’s attorneys, who argued and defended motions in favor of and against Ousman Sonko’s name being valid on the voter registration.
The implication is Sonko’s presidential run in the February 2024 election. On November 17, the Supreme Court overturned an October order that had deleted Mr. Sonko from the electoral rolls after he was sentenced to two years in prison for morality offenses in June.
This recent court judgment authorizes Ousman Sonko, who is presently imprisoned, to rejoin the campaign.
The Senegalese state counsel has announced his intention to file a stay of execution and appeal at a higher jurisdiction
