Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Access to Information Commission, led by Chairperson Neneh MacDouall Gaye, met with President Adama Barrow to update him on the commission’s progress and to seek government support in advancing access to information in The Gambia.
Speaking to GRTS following the meeting, MacDouall Gaye emphasized the need for strong implementation of The Gambia’s access to information law, highlighting that while the legislation has been passed, its effectiveness depends on proper enforcement.
“Now, it’s one thing passing the law, but another thing implementing the law. And so we thought we would come to His Excellency the President and tell him where we are, what we’re doing, and to seek his support in our mandate to implement the law. Because the main information holders would be the government, and the requesters would be the public,” she stated.
MacDouall Gaye also stressed that the law benefits all residents of The Gambia, regardless of citizenship status, and that government backing is crucial for its successful execution.
Since its establishment in September last year, the commission has been laying the groundwork to fulfill its mandate. MacDouall Gaye outlined key steps taken so far, including the development of an internal work plan, preparations for a five-year strategic plan, and a study tour. She also noted that the commission is already handling requests and complaints related to access to information.
A major priority for the commission is a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate the public on their rights under the law. However, securing funding for this initiative remains a challenge.
The State House communications office issued a statement reaffirming President Barrow’s commitment to transparency and governance. “President Barrow recognizes the importance of implementing access to information for the development of The Gambia. He further expressed delight at the progress made by the commission and assured them of his continued support,” the statement read.
The commission extended its gratitude to the President for his political will in making access to information a reality, emphasizing that strengthening public awareness and government cooperation will be essential in fostering a more open and accountable society.
