Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Artificial Intelligence Gam Network (AI Gam Network) is calling for government support and collaboration to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) systems to enhance transportation safety in The Gambia. This appeal was made during the launch of the Deep Learning IndabaX Gambia 2024 (DLIXG24) at the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTMI), which focused on “Applications of AI in Transportation Safety.”
Babucarr Bah, Chairperson of AI Gam Network, emphasized the potential benefits of AI in reducing road traffic accidents, improving traffic flow, and aiding in criminal justice. He highlighted that while the network has innovative ideas, it lacks the manpower to fully implement these solutions and urged the government, private sector, and other stakeholders to support their efforts.
Olawale Fabiyi, a member of the organization, discussed the challenges in Gambia’s road safety, noting that the OIC road project has led to increased accidents despite improved infrastructure. He proposed that AI-driven predictive models could analyze accident data to identify patterns and risk factors, guiding targeted safety measures and interventions.
Muhammed Jamaal, Vice Chairperson of AI Gam Network, pointed out that the increase in accidents following the construction of the Berlin Harding highway is attributed to driver behavior rather than road quality. He argued that AI technology could address these issues more effectively than traditional methods, offering solutions that are not susceptible to bribery or manipulation.
Jamaal also stressed the importance of involving policymakers in the development and regulation of AI to prevent misuse. He called for comprehensive policies to guide the application of AI in various sectors, including transportation.
The AI Gam Network’s initiative aims to build a robust ecosystem for AI in The Gambia, fostering local development and addressing critical challenges in road safety through advanced technology.
