Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – In a surprising turn of events, the Dakar flagrante delictos court has acquitted Gambian jet-setter Aisha Fatty of all charges related to blackmailing on WhatsApp, much to the dismay of Senegalese businessman Abdoulaye Thiam and his advisors.
The court, in its ruling delivered on Friday, June 7, 2024, dismissed Thiam’s request for further investigation, thereby concluding the blackmail case in favor of Aisha Fatty.
The Gambian famous socialite faced prosecution for the alleged illegal collection of personal data belonging to Abdoulaye Thiam, and threats of dissemination, following a complaint lodged by Thiam. The trial, which commenced on May 24, was adjourned until May 31 to facilitate the use of the defendant’s mobile phone as evidence—a measure Fatty staunchly opposed during the investigation by the Cybercrime Division.
After the case was pleaded on May 31, it was adjourned until June 7. On Friday, the court not only acquitted Fatty but also ordered the return of her confiscated cell phone.
The judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to convict Fatty of the charges brought against her, much to the relief of her supporters who had been closely following the case.
While this verdict marks a significant victory for Aisha Fatty, her legal troubles are far from over. She remains entangled in another legal battle with Abdoulaye Thiam, having been indicted and placed under arrest warrant on May 28 for alleged fraud involving over a billion CFA francs.
As a result, Fatty will continue to remain in custody pending the conclusion of the judicial investigation initiated by the judge of the 3rd investigating office.
This development signifies a critical juncture in the ongoing legal saga between Aisha Fatty and Abdoulaye Thiam, with both parties awaiting further judicial determinations in the high-profile case.
