Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Prominent human rights defender Alioune Tine has publicly responded to criticism from pro-government internet users, urging respect for human rights organizations in the wake of recent arrests of individuals critical of the new PASTEF regime in Senegal.

Tine, the president of the Afrikajom Center Foundation, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to address the attacks directed at human rights bodies. His message comes against a backdrop of increasing concern over the detention of figures like Abdou Nguer, a vocal critic.

You patriots must have respect for the leaders of human rights organizations who yesterday defended your leaders and defended you during the periods when you were victims of the rulers and arbitrary power of the state,” Tine stated in his tweet.

He pointedly reminded members of the now-ruling PASTEF party of their changed responsibilities. “Today, you represent the strength and power of the state, so adapt yourself to the exercise of our power.

Concluding with a firm stance, Tine added, “If it bothers you, that means that we are doing our work.”

This intervention by a well-respected human rights advocate highlights a growing unease within civil society regarding the new administration’s approach to dissent. The recent arrests of critics, including Abdou Nguer, who was reportedly detained this week, have fueled concerns about potential restrictions on freedom of expression under the PASTEF government.

Abdou Nguer, a known media personality, was reportedly placed under arrest following accusations of disseminating false news. This action has been condemned by rights organizations, who fear a crackdown on critical voices.

Alioune Tine’s message serves as a timely reminder of the crucial role human rights organizations play in holding power to account, regardless of which political actors are in charge.

His appeal for respect and his assertion of the continued importance of their work underscore the need for vigilance in safeguarding fundamental freedoms in Senegal’s evolving political landscape.

The situation remains fluid, but Tine’s intervention signals a willingness within civil society to monitor and speak out against any perceived erosion of democratic principles and human rights under the new government.
