Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Two violent robbery incidents have shaken the West Coast Region of The Gambia, leaving one American citizen seriously injured and two suspected repeat offenders in police custody, What’s On Gambia has reliably reported.
According to the online medium, in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 14th, between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., a brutal attack occurred in Sukuta. An American man living on the first floor of a residential building with his wife and baby was assaulted by a lone intruder who reportedly entered the apartment through a window armed with broken beer bottles.
The attacker began stabbing the man while threatening to kill him, forcing the victim’s wife to flee the scene with their infant in search of help. Despite sustaining multiple stab wounds, the American managed to overpower and restrain the assailant until neighbors arrived.
“We found him bleeding heavily but holding the thief down,” an eyewitness told What’s On Gambia. The residents then tied the assailant with a rope and rushed the injured man to the Sukuta Health Center for urgent treatment.
On their return, they stopped at the police station to report the incident. Two officers accompanied them back to the scene, where the suspect was quickly identified as Omar Jallow, a man reportedly known to law enforcement. He was also taken to the health center for treatment but allegedly began verbally abusing the police officers. Jallow was later transferred to the police station, where he remains in custody.
In a separate but similarly disturbing incident, another attempted robbery was reported in Bijilo just hours earlier, around 3:00 a.m. A woman sleeping with her children was startled by the sound of an intruder inside her home. Upon research, she discovered the man hiding behind a sofa.
Her attempt to wake the security guard on duty was unsuccessful, but her quick action in alerting household staff led to a confrontation. The intruder shattered a glass bottle and threatened to stab her. With the help of neighbors, the man was eventually subdued and handed over to the Brusubi Police Station.
He was identified as Momodou Salieu Bah, described by What’s On Gambia as a “well-known armed robber.”
Both incidents have raised alarm among residents, particularly concerning the safety of expatriates and families in the region. The Gambia Police Force has yet to release an official statement, but community members are calling for increased patrols and improved security in residential neighborhoods.
In both cases, residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly as investigations into both incidents continue.
