Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The All People’s Party-Sobeyaa (APP-Sobeyaa) has strongly criticized the Barrow administration following revelations that the Janneh Commission failed to submit a detailed report on the sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s forfeited assets, calling it a “betrayal” of the Gambian people’s trust.
In a statement signed by APP-Sobeyaa National Spokesperson Ousainou Bobb, the party expressed outrage arguing that Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services Dr. Ismaila Ceesay admitted that the commission, established to investigate Jammeh’s financial dealings, had not provided a comprehensive account of the asset sales or disclosed the identities of the buyers.
“This admission is a damning indictment of the Barrow administration’s utter failure to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability they so loudly profess,” the statement read. “It is an affront to every Gambian who believed in the promise of justice and an end to corruption with impunity.”
The Janneh Commission, set up in the early years of President Barrow’s rule, was widely seen as a cornerstone of post-Jammeh reform efforts. Its mandate included tracing and recovering assets unlawfully acquired during the former president’s 22-year rule.
However, APP-Sobeyaa claims the lack of transparency regarding the disposal of Jammeh’s assets raises “grave questions” about the government’s integrity and commitment to justice.
“Was this omission deliberate? Are powerful interests being shielded?” the party questioned, suggesting that either “gross incompetence or a calculated effort to obscure corrupt dealings” was at play.
APP-Sobeyaa is demanding the immediate and full publication of the Janneh Commission’s final report, including all appendices detailing asset sales and buyer identities. They also call for legal action against any individuals or entities found to have engaged in corrupt practices, regardless of their political connections.
The party further expressed skepticism about the recently announced plan to establish a National Assembly Committee to investigate the matter, warning of potential conflicts of interest due to political affiliations. It instead urged the creation of an independent investigative body involving youth and civil society stakeholders to ensure credibility and transparency.
“The time for change is now,” the statement concluded. “APP-Sobeyaa is committed to building a Gambia where integrity prevails over greed and justice supersedes impunity.”
