In a press briefing today at Kairaba police station, authorities announced the arrest of a Sierra Leonean national in connection with the murder of 60-year-old British citizen, Shakina Chinedu, in The Gambia. Chinedu, who had been living in The Gambia since 2017, was tragically found dead in a toilet drain in Madina Alagie a village near Mamuda in Kombo South.
The suspect, apprehended after the incident was reported on February 14th, 2024, confessed to the crime, according to the police. Material evidence, including a pistol, hammer, spade, money, and keys, was recovered from the suspect.
The suspect admitted to using the hammer to strike Chinedu at the back of the neck and then burying her in a toilet drain.
Following the murder, the suspect stole various items from Chinedu, including money, laptops, a handbag, and keys. The police emphasized that the suspect’s arrest was aided by the recovery of these stolen items.
In a related update, two suspects, a Gambian and another Sierra Leonean, were arrested and charged in connection with a robbery in Fajara that occurred the previous week. The police noted that a significant number of crimes in the country are committed by foreign nationals, highlighting a concerning trend.
The British High Commission is yet to release an official statement regarding Chinedu’s death.
