Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- The National Assembly of the Gambia has officially passed the Election Bill 2025, doubling the registration fee for political parties from D1 million to D2 million. The bill was approved today, the 29th of September 2025, following its third reading, with no debate recorded during the final passage.
Under the new law, political parties must deposit D2 million with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to secure registration, a move which is said to, aimed at curbing the rise of so-called “briefcase political parties” and ensuring only serious entities participate in the democratic process.
While supporters argue the increase is necessary to maintain order in the political space, critics warn the increment could effectively shut out smaller parties and limit political competition. Concerns have been raised that the change favors wealthy actors, making it more difficult for grassroots movements or aspiring politicians with limited resources to engage in national politics.
The IEC will now implement the new fee structure, marking a shift in the requirements for political participation. Observers say the development could reshape the country’s political landscape, raising questions about inclusivity and access in Gambia’s multiparty democracy.
