Gambiaj.com – (CONAKRY, Guinea) – The African Union (AU) has lifted sanctions against Guinea, marking a significant step in the country’s return to constitutional order following the September 2021 coup d’état.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the AU Peace and Security Council announced the decision to end Guinea’s suspension from AU activities, citing the successful organization of the presidential election held on December 28, which resulted in the election of General Mamadi Doumbouya.

The Council said it welcomed the conduct of the polls and subsequently “decided to lift the suspension of the participation of the Republic of Guinea in AU activities.”

The announcement came as President Doumbouya accepted the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, signaling a new institutional phase following the election.

In a press release published Friday, the Presidency said the resignation was presented by the head of government and accepted by the president “in accordance with republican practices” at the conclusion of the electoral process, which authorities described as calm and festive.

President Doumbouya congratulated Prime Minister Bah and the outgoing ministers for the work carried out “in the service of the Nation,” underscoring that holding government office is both “an honor and a commitment to the people of Guinea.

In line with constitutional provisions, the president signed two decrees: one formally ending the mandates of the prime minister and members of government, and another instructing senior administrative officials—including directors of cabinet and general secretaries—to oversee routine state affairs pending the appointment of a new government.

The presidency also announced that outgoing ministers would retain their official vehicles, residences, and security protection adapted to the prevailing security context until the formation of the next cabinet.

Additionally, President Doumbouya tasked Amadou Oury Bah with strengthening the political movement The Generation for Modernity and Development (GMD) in preparation for upcoming electoral contests, particularly the legislative elections. The head of state said the timetable for the next elections would be set from next month, in accordance with the Electoral Code.

The lifting of AU sanctions, combined with the post-election political transition, underscores renewed regional recognition of Guinea’s political trajectory as it moves toward consolidating civilian governance.
