Gambiaj.com – (BAKU, Azerbaijan) – The Parliament of Azerbaijan is deliberating a bill to exempt holders of diplomatic passports from Azerbaijan and The Gambia from mutual visa requirements. This development was discussed during the Thursday meeting of the Committee for International Relations and Inter-parliamentary Relations of the Milli Majlis, as reported by the national news agency, APA.
The proposal for this agreement was initiated in May when Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with his Gambian counterpart, Mamadou Tangara, in Banjul. Among the topics discussed was the abolition of the visa regime for diplomatic passport holders from both countries. This meeting laid the groundwork for the current legislative push.
On Thursday, the draft law titled “Approval of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Gambia on exemption from visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports” was recommended to the plenary session of the Azerbaijani parliament. The swift approval of this draft law is anticipated by both nations as a means to bolster their diplomatic ties.
The exemption from visa requirements is expected to facilitate greater cooperation in various sectors, including trade, education, and cultural exchange. Both Azerbaijan and The Gambia are optimistic that this legislative change will pave the way for enhanced collaboration and mutual benefits.
As the bill moves towards approval, it signifies a step forward in fostering stronger international relations and promoting closer ties between Azerbaijan and The Gambia.
