Councilor Abdoulie Jammeh of the Brufut ward has been released by the police this Friday afternoon on self-bail after being held in custody at the Banjul police headquarters. Jammeh expressed gratitude to his coworkers for their support, unity, and strength upon his journey home after his release.
The councilor’s release comes after he was pursued by the police over comments and actions he is said to have made during a council meeting, leading to charges of damage to council property and conspiracy to commit a crime involving council property.
The Gambia police force had visited Hon. Abdoulie Jammeh’s compound in Brufut on December 4, 2023, posing as searchers. Unable to find the councilor, they arrested his brother and held him for nearly twenty-four hours as a ransom.
On February 1, 2024, the Gambia Police Force revoked Hon. Abdoulie Jammeh’s police bail and placed him under arrest at Police Headquarters in Banjul. This latest arrest followed his previous detainment for 72 hours in the Police Anti-Crime Unit at Banjulinding, starting on December 5, 2023. Jammeh was granted bail on December 7, 2023, but had to comply with bail requirements, including daily reporting to the Banjul Police Headquarters.
In response to these developments, the Brikama Area Council has condemned police brutality, abuse of police powers, unconstitutional and unlawful actions, and the abuse of the basic human rights of its elected councillor, Abdoulie Jammeh, in a press statement regarding his recent troubles with the police.
