Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – Bangladesh and The Gambia have expressed optimism for a swift resolution of the case filed against Myanmar on the charge of Rohingya genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The hope for resolution was reflected during a meeting between Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Hasna Mahmud and Gambian Justice Minister and Attorney General Dawda A. Jallow on the sidelines of the preparatory meeting of foreign ministers ahead of the 15th summit of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in The Gambia, according to a foreign ministry press release.
During the meeting, Minister Jallow expressed sincere thanks to the Bangladesh government for providing humanitarian shelter to forcibly displaced Rohingya people. He also conveyed his gratitude for Bangladesh’s financial assistance in handling the Rohingya Genocide case.
Minister Mahmud discussed Bangladesh’s steps to provide humanitarian shelter to Rohingyas and highlighted future obstacles regarding the crisis. She emphasized the importance of repatriating the Rohingyas in Bangladesh to their homeland in Myanmar to find a sustainable solution to the crisis.
Minister Jallow described the current scenario of the Rohingya Genocide case and expressed confidence in proving the allegations of genocide against Myanmar. However, he raised the issue of insufficient funds to run the case at the ICJ.
Minister Mahmud assured to provide necessary legal assistance and evidence from Bangladesh’s side to The Gambia to continue the case.
In 2019, The Gambia filed a case against Myanmar at the ICJ alleging genocide following a consensus of the OIC member states.
