Gambiaj.com – (Kaduna, Nigeria) – Rohey Malick Lowe, the Lord Mayor of Banjul, has reaffirmed her commitment to gender equality during a recent visit to Kaduna, Nigeria, where she engaged in insightful discussions on women’s empowerment and leadership.
Mayor Lowe was in Kaduna on the invitation of the Lord Mayor of the City of Leeds, England, as part of a broader engagement to strengthen the Network of Locally Elected Women of Africa (REFELA). During her visit, she paid a courtesy call to Honorable Imaan Sulayman-Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, at her residence.
The meeting focused extensively on REFELA’s work and the broader mission of women’s empowerment across the continent. Mayor Lowe described the exchange as both “eye-opening and inspiring,” emphasizing the importance of such dialogues in shaping the future of African women.
“She shared stories of resilience and determination that truly showcased the strength of African women,” Mayor Lowe said of her host. “It was a humbling experience to hear her perspectives and learn from her vast knowledge.”
The informal gathering brought together an influential mix of guests, including politicians from Kano and representatives of the HeForShe campaign, fostering a rich exchange of ideas on advancing gender equity in both local governance and national policy.
Reflecting on the experience, Mayor Lowe noted that the meeting had deepened her motivation to continue championing women’s rights. “The conversation further solidified my belief in the importance of empowering women and working towards gender equality in Africa,” she stated.
“It reminded me why I remain committed to this cause, following my own journey serving at the pinnacle of women’s leadership in Africa.”
She also commended Honourable Sulayman-Ibrahim for her grace and leadership. “She was the perfect host—humble, wise, and action-driven. There is so much we can all learn from her.”
Mayor Lowe extended heartfelt appreciation to the Lord Mayor of Leeds for facilitating the engagement and offered warm congratulations on her coronation as the Princess of Ham. “You’ve broken barriers that continue to inspire us all,” she said.
Mayor Lowe says she remains focused on expanding REFELA’s reach and ensuring greater representation of African women in decision-making spaces. “I look forward to the rest of my visit as we continue to develop REFELA for greater impact and more empowerment in our continent.”
