Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) has officially launched a cutting-edge Port Management Information System (PMIS), marking a major digital transformation for the Port of Banjul. The system, developed and deployed by Spanish tech firm Prodevelop, went live on April 3, 2025, following a six-month implementation process.

Known as Posidonia, the new system is designed to streamline and digitize key port operations, including port calls, cargo handling, invoicing, service coordination, and the submission of electronic documents.

With this move, the Port of Banjul joins a growing list of regional ports adopting modern digital tools to enhance efficiency and competitiveness in the global maritime industry.

GPA Managing Director Ousman M. Jobarteh said the system is already proving transformative.

This system is already changing how we operate. With real-time analytics, automated workflows, and improved stakeholder coordination, the Port of Banjul is positioning itself for increased trade efficiency and international competitiveness,” he stated.

The PMIS introduces real-time data tracking and smarter coordination between port users, allowing for faster vessel turnaround, improved safety standards, and more reliable revenue management.

Christophe Joubert, Deputy CRO of Prodevelop, demonstrated Posidonia’s main features and its adaptability for future integration with larger systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Port Community Systems (PCS), and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).

The project was delivered in close collaboration with GPA’s IT team, using a phased rollout strategy backed by cloud-based infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS). Weekly meetings, diagnostics, training, and user feedback were integral to the implementation.

Captain Kulay Manneh, GPA’s Director of Harbors, stressed the broader significance of the upgrade:

This is just the beginning. PMIS will enable us to optimize port calls, improve safety, and generate valuable insights. We are committed to embracing technological change for sustainable growth.”

GPA’s Director of Information Technology, Ousman Jammeh, provided a technical breakdown of the five-phase implementation plan, which involved the IT department at every stage—from systems design and testing to rollout and user training.

The digital overhaul is expected to drastically reduce manual paperwork, increase data accuracy, and align the Port of Banjul with international port management standards, paving the way for greater trade volumes and partnerships in the region.
