Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – The Office of the Executive Coordinator in Banjul is set to commemorate the 208th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Banjul (formerly Bathurst) between the King of Kombo and the British. Ebrima Jawo, the Executive Coordinator for Banjul City Council, announced plans for a cultural festival to mark this significant milestone.
Originally scheduled for celebration in 2016, the 200th anniversary was postponed due to the Presidential Elections that year. Now, with a renewed focus, the event aims to not only attract Gambians from home but also the Diaspora, promoting tourism and culture in Banjul.
Jawo highlighted that the festival will showcase a variety of cultural displays and festivities, contributing to the promotion of The Gambia’s rich ethnic, cultural, and traditional diversity. The event will serve as a platform for cultural exchange and unity among diverse communities, with plans for pre-planning and organization underway.
The cultural event, which will be part of what is dubbed “Banjul Week,” is expected to draw attention to the historical significance of the Treaty of Banjul while celebrating the city’s heritage and culture.
