Bayern Munich have confirmed Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season.
Bayern have endured a dire campaign to date under Tuchel, sitting eight points adrift in the Bundesliga title race and on the brink of Champions League elimination following a 1-0 defeat to Lazio last week.
That poor form all comes in spite of the club forking out over €150m on star players Harry Kane and Kim Min-jae over the summer.
Speaking in a club statement announcing the news, club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: “In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer.
“Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and Bundesliga.
“I also explicitly hold the team accountable in this regard. In the Champions League in particular, after losing 1-0 in the first leg at Lazio, we are convinced we will reach the quarter-finals at a packed Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”
Tuchel also commented on his impending exit, stating: “We have agreed that we will end our working relationship at the end of this season,” said Tuchel.
“Until then, I will of course continue to do everything I can with my coaching staff to achieve maximum success.”
90min revealed at the end of January that Bayern could be at the centre of a tug of war with Liverpool over Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso – the Spaniard’s side are top of the Bundesliga table, unbeaten in 22 games, and their impressive displays have also alerted another of his former clubs, Real Madrid.
