According to the Bissau-Guinean Military Police, members of the Presidential Palace Battalion and National Guard agents engaged in combat in Bissau during the early hours of today, resulting in the deaths of at least two troops, as reported to Lusa News Agency.
The same source claims that a soldier from the Presidential Battalion and an agent from the National Guard were among the deceased. The source from the soldiers Police, an army organization that upholds discipline among the soldiers in the event of armed confrontations, stated, “At this point, we are still investigating, but at least we can confirm these two deaths.”
Two injuries have been reported thus far, according to the same source, and both are undergoing medical attention.
A statement has also been released by General Mamadu Turé “Nkrumah,” the deputy chief of staff of the Armed Forces. He declared that the “situation has returned to calm.” According to the statement, Vítor Tchongo, the Commander of the National Guard, authorized the forcible release of two government officials who were being held at the Judiciary Police (PJ), which is what started the mayhem.
The statement says, “The Republican Forces rose to the challenge and restored the constitutional order.”
According to reports that made it to Lusa, the gunfire could be heard all across Bissau and was coming from the area around the National Guard stations and the barracks in the Luanda district.
