Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A fire incident that ravaged part of Hamza Barracks in Banjul on Saturday was reported at approximately 1700hrs. The inferno completely destroyed a block housing military personnel and their families, leaving several residences in ruins and displacing the affected families.
Eyewitnesses explained that the fast moving blaze and smoke could be seen from a long distance, prompting curious onlookers to gather around the area. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Gambia Armed Forces confirmed the incident and indicated that in response to this crisis, the displaced families have been temporarily relocated to Friendship Hostel in Bakau, where they are receiving interim assistance. Authorities are actively engaged in addressing the situation to ensure the well-being and recovery of those impacted.
High-ranking officials, including the Honourable Minister of Defence, Serign Modou Njie, his Permanent Secretary Rohie Bittaye Darboe, Chief of Defence Staff General Mamat O Cham and his deputy, the Commander of the Gambia National Army, along with National Assembly Members for Banjul North and South, and representatives from the National Disaster Management Agency, promptly visited the site to assess the extent of the damages.
Efforts are underway to provide comprehensive support and rehabilitation to the affected families, underscoring the government’s commitment to their welfare amidst this unfortunate incident.
