The Gambia’s police have admitted to arresting numerous Brikama Area Councillors, while others have willingly shown themselves at the Brikama police station. According to a Gambia Police Force Communications’ social media report, “the arrests followed a council resolution pertaining to the CEO and the Director of Finance of the council.”
According to the police statement, a preliminary investigation suggests that all the councilors arrested unanimously agreed to stop the suspended CEO, Modou Jonga, from using his official vehicle. Additionally, one of the councilors seized the key and deflated the vehicle assigned to the CEO.
The police didn’t specify the number of councilors currently being detained nor did it indicate if the arrested councilors have been charged.
The statement issued by the police however hints that “the investigation so far indicates offenses: “conspiracy to commit a felony” and “malicious injury to property,” the statement reads, while the police announce further updates on the case as the investigation continues.
