Gambiaj.com – (BRIKAMA, The Gambia) – Following the recent skirmish between the Brikama Area Council (BAC) and the police, Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray visited the Brikama Police Station and led his officers on a tour of the roads surrounding the Brikama Market. The tour aimed to assess the ongoing situation and engage with local stakeholders, particularly concerning Operation Clear the Road.
During his visit, IGP Touray surveyed the market area and the contested regions where the BAC has been resistant to evacuating occupants. This on-the-ground inspection allowed him to witness firsthand the issues raised by the BAC regarding their infrastructure projects.
Coincidentally, BAC Chairman Yankuba Darboe encountered the police chief and used the opportunity to voice his concerns. He emphasized the significance of the council’s ongoing road-paving project and its necessity for local development.
In response, IGP Touray acknowledged the importance of the council’s work but reiterated the police force’s commitment to continuing Operation Clear the Road. However, in a gesture of cooperation, he agreed to allow the BAC to proceed with their identified plans until after the Tobaski celebrations.
“I have seen what they erected there to deter vehicles from passing. We should exercise flexibility,” said IGP Touray. He emphasized the need for collaboration and accountability, stating, “By next Wednesday, these places will be vacated. And I am going to hold him personally, institutionally, and regionally responsible if there are any lapses.”
Chairman Darboe agreed to the terms, committing the BAC’s resources to work alongside the police in ensuring the operation’s success post-Tobaski. The temporary truce marks a step towards resolving the tension between the Brikama Area Council and the police, with both parties aiming for a peaceful and cooperative outcome.
This development reflects a significant move towards maintaining order while accommodating the council’s developmental goals, demonstrating a balanced approach to conflict resolution in Brikama.
