Gambiaj.com – (BUNDUNG, The Gambia) — In a bid to address the longstanding issue of inadequate water supply in Bundung, National Assembly Member (NAM) Sulayman Jammeh has taken decisive steps to ease the water crisis in his constituency. Hon. Jammeh has recently overseen the drilling of six boreholes as a temporary measure while urging the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) to expedite the ongoing water supply project.
Hon. Jammeh expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to alleviate the suffering caused by the water shortages. He noted that, following the intervention of President Adama Barrow, three potential sites for boreholes were identified by the community and himself. However, challenges arose due to the high concentration of rainwater in those areas, complicating the process of selecting suitable locations.
In response, NAWEC initiated the drilling of a borehole in Nema Wasloum. Although the drilling has been completed, the process of laying pipes and connecting the borehole to the water network is still pending. Hon. Jammeh stressed the urgency of completing this work, noting that Bundung residents have long endured the hardship of limited water access.
“Water is a significant issue here, especially in the densely populated areas of Bundung,” said Hon. Jammeh. “Many people have taps in their homes but cannot access water due to low pressure.”
Hon. Jammeh highlighted that the water supply issue has persisted for many years, despite continuous efforts to resolve it. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Bundung community and the government, which have led to some progress. As part of these efforts, 29 community standpipes have been installed, funded by the NAM’s constituency development fund.
“I believe that if these taps are connected with proper water pressure, access to water will no longer be a problem. Water is life, and this is why we are placing a strong emphasis on improving the water supply,” he stated.
Reflecting on his previous tenure as a ward councilor, Hon. Jammeh recalled his contributions to the water supply system, including the installation of over 80 community standpipes that successfully provided water to beneficiaries.
As the current NAM for Bundung, Hon. Jammeh reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the water supply situation is fully addressed. He expressed optimism about the ongoing efforts but urged NAWEC to accelerate their work.
“We are hopeful that the situation will be resolved. I will not rest while my people suffer without water. With the combined commitment of the community and the government, I urge NAWEC to demonstrate greater dedication to resolving this issue,” Hon. Jammeh concluded.
