The Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure (MOTWI), Ebrima Sillah, has voiced dissatisfaction with the slow progress of the Bundung Highway construction project. The highway, long plagued by decay, has been a source of frustration for commuters in the Kanifing Municipality, linking Serekunda and Latrikunda Sabiji.
Despite government efforts to address the highway’s condition by contracting a construction company, Minister Sillah expressed disappointment during a recent visit to Bundung. He emphasized the need for the contractor to expedite the project and rectify identified defects promptly.
“We will not accept any further delays to the project,” Minister Sillah stated firmly. “The contractor has agreed to expedite and also fix those defects identified, while we have agreed to increase the manpower for the sub-contractors, some of whom were demobilized prematurely, leading to miscommunications.”
Minister Sillah highlighted the importance of completing the project by March 2024, acknowledging the challenges and inconvenience faced by the heavily populated community. He emphasized that excuses for delays would not be tolerated.
SSTP, the contractor responsible for the project, attributed the delays to obstacles on the road, such as water pipes, telephone, and electricity cables. However, the company’s manager, Momodou Sowe, assured authorities that the construction, including the relocation of water services, would be completed as planned.
Lawmaker Sulayman Jammeh of Bundungka Kunda thanked the Minister for his visit and stressed the community’s desire for efficient and timely completion of the project. He expressed optimism that the road’s completion would bring great joy to the people of Bundung.
With the government’s insistence on swift action and the contractor’s commitment to overcoming obstacles, there is hope that the Bundung Highway construction project will be completed on schedule, providing much-needed relief to commuters and residents alike.
