Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- Veteran cattle dealer Amadou Kora has admitted to influencing the pricing of former president Yahya Jammeh’s cattle in Kanilai despite having no official role or invitation to participate in the sales.
Testifying before the National Assembly Select Committee probing Jammeh’s assets, Kora, a prominent livestock trader since 1987, said he travelled to Kanilai out of curiosity but ended up advising the sales team on how much the cattle should cost.
According to him, the former Registrar General, Alieu Jallow, was in charge of the sale. Kora told the committee that upon arrival, he found cattle being sold at what he described as “cheap” prices, with some valued at only D5,000. Using his experience in the trade, he urged Jallow to increase prices, suggesting D12,000 instead.
He said his intervention was purely based on public interest, insisting that the cattle were state assets and “should not be sold cheaply.” Despite not being part of the official team, Kora remained at the site for two days, assisting with the process without any formal assignment or payment.
His testimony adds to the growing revelations about irregularities surrounding the disposal of Jammeh’s seized assets, with previous witnesses highlighting poor valuation, lack of oversight, and unauthorized involvement of private individuals.
The committee continues its investigation to determine how much was realized from the sales and whether the transactions were conducted in accordance with the law.
