Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A video posted by What’s On-Gambia on Thursday morning has led to the swift identification of three young men caught attempting to break into a house in Mariama Kunda. The footage, recorded by a home CCTV camera connected to a mobile phone, showed the suspects scaling a fence and trying to gain access to the house in broad daylight.
The homeowners were away at the time, unaware that their security system was transmitting the break-in attempt live. The video was forwarded to What’s On-Gambia, which then shared it on its social media platform, urging the public to help identify the suspects.
The post quickly attracted a flood of reactions, with some users claiming to recognize the individuals. One commentator identified one of the suspects as “Lempeh,” stating that he was notorious for break-ins and mobile phone snatching in the area. “He was once a very hardworking kid though,” the commenter added.
Another social media user called for immediate police action, expressing frustration over recurring crimes. “The police should investigate and apprehend these useless individuals ASAP and take them away from the streets. Because they’re dream killers, heart breakers, high blood pressure inventors. Imagine coming home and finding your valuable items stolen by these good-for-nothing fools,” she wrote.
A few hours later, What’s On-Gambia announced that the suspects had been identified. The three men—Ousman Camara, alias “Lempeh,” Saiban Saine, and Buba Cham—are reportedly well-known to the police in Latriya and Brusubi. According to the platform, they have been arrested multiple times but are often released after a few days, only to resume their criminal activities.
Although some people questioned the method used by What’s On-Gambia, the incident has sparked renewed debate about crime prevention and law enforcement effectiveness in The Gambia, with many calling for stricter measures to curb repeat offenses.
