Ceesay Defends Sharing NPP Clarification, Says Government Acted to Protect Presidency

Dr Ismaila Ceesay

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, has defended the decision to share a clarification issued by the National People’s Party (NPP) on the ministry’s official social media platforms, saying the move was necessary to protect the integrity of the presidency from what he described as “false and damaging claims.”

Speaking in an interview on West Coast Radio’s Coffee Time, Dr. Ceesay said allegations relating to presidential appointments fall within constitutional authority and require an official response to set the record straight.

He insisted that claims the president attempted to offer a political position to an opposition figure “never happened” and were intended to mislead the public.

The minister also criticized the United Democratic Movement (UDM), accusing it of spreading inconsistencies and political fabrications.

He pointed to public remarks by Talib Bensouda, whom he noted has expressed presidential ambitions despite the party maintaining that it has not selected a candidate. According to Dr. Ceesay, such contradictions weaken the credibility of the allegations.

Dr. Ceesay further highlighted what he described as key achievements under President Adama Barrow, including expanded electricity access, improved water supply, road construction, additional classrooms, university expansion, and programs targeting youth and women empowerment.

He said these initiatives demonstrate the government’s long-term commitment to improving living conditions.

Addressing concerns over passport access, he dismissed claims that Gambians were facing widespread difficulties, noting that biometric registration teams have travelled across the country and abroad to serve citizens.

He acknowledged delays in issuing national identity cards but said a new agreement with Margins Group would modernize the system and enable citizens to obtain both digital and physical IDs.

On the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the minister maintained that the institution remains independent and credible, cautioning against what he called baseless accusations that could undermine public confidence ahead of future elections.

He also spoke about the country’s maritime prospects, describing The Gambia’s location along major shipping routes as a strategic advantage. He cited plans to develop a deep-sea port in Sanyang and ongoing upgrades at the Port of Banjul as measures aimed at boosting employment and attracting investment.

Dr. Ceesay urged political actors to promote unity and exercise responsibility in public communication, warning that misinformation “can mislead a nation in seconds.” He expressed confidence that voters would prioritize stability and development when making political choices.

  1. Politics makes for strange bedfellows! Who better to defend the president than the ones who used to vilify him the most?!
