Cherno Hamidou Savage Appears in Court for Alleged CFA 14 Million Fraud

Gambiaj.com – (KANIFING) – Cherno Hamidou Savage appeared on Monday before Magistrate E. Colley at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on charges of defrauding fourteen million CFA (14,000,000 CFA), equivalent to one million, four hundred thousand dalasis (1,400,000 GMD).

The accused was charged with obtaining money by false pretences, contrary to Section 288 of the Criminal Code, Cap 10:01, Volume 3, Laws of The Gambia. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The particulars of the offence indicate that on 10th November 2023, at SeneGambia and various locations in the Kanifing Municipality, Savage allegedly used false pretences and intended to defraud Pap Adam Koita and Ahmed Tijan Mendy. He allegedly obtained the sum of fourteen million CFA, equivalent to one million, four hundred thousand dalasis, claiming it was to purchase one thousand tons of sugar. The accused reportedly knew this representation to be false at the time.

When the matter was brought before Magistrate Colley, Chief Prosecutor Inna Jallow appeared for the Inspector General of Police. She stated that she did not oppose bail for the accused since the offence charged is bailable. However, she requested the court to consider the significant amount involved when granting bail.

Subsequently, Magistrate Colley granted the accused bail in the sum of 1.4 million dalasis or five sureties who must deposit their valid ID or passport.

The case was adjourned until 10th June 2024.
