Chief of Defence Cham Warns Against Indiscipline in the Army, Pledges Transformation

Gambiaj.com – (FARAFENNI) – Lieutenant General Mamat O. Cham, the Chief of Defence of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), issued a stern warning against indiscipline within the army, emphasizing that ‘indiscipline and disloyalty will not be compromised’. The country’s army chief made these remarks during a visit to the 2 Infantry Battalion in Farafenni as part of his countrywide tour of military installations.

CDS Cham outlined his vision for the army, stating, “We want to massively transform the army and bring a lot of unprecedented development.” He highlighted capacity building as a top priority to ensure the GAF becomes a professional army.

In response to concerns raised by soldiers, Cham assured them that their issues are being addressed, stating, “We are currently with the director of engineering of the army and I can assure you all that all your concerns are noted. In fact, after the tour, some of the issues you highlighted will be addressed.”

He urged soldiers to strengthen Civil Military Relations (CMR) with local communities and collaborate with other security services to maintain peace and tranquility.

Rohey Bittaye Darboe, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defence, emphasized the significance of the tour and pledged continued support to alleviate difficulties faced by Gambian soldiers.

During the Laminkoto meeting, local residents praised the soldiers for their support in addressing community challenges. The alkalo of the village expressed gratitude, saying, “We want to thank the soldiers for their support to the community of the area. I can tell you that the Navy at the Laminkoto crossing point are supporting pregnant women in the area in term of helping them to cross to Janjangbureh among others.”
