Gambiaj.com – (MARSEILLE, France) – French container carrier CMA CGM has announced the introduction of a new Port Congestion Surcharge (PCS) due to the ongoing congestion issues at the port of Banjul, Gambia. The surcharge will come into effect on 15 August 2024 for shipments from the United States and 1 September 2024 for shipments from Latin American countries.
The PCS, set at US$500 / €460 / GB£385 per TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), is being implemented to cover the additional costs incurred due to the congestion at the Banjul port. CMA CGM emphasized that the surcharge is crucial to ensure the timely delivery of goods despite the logistical challenges.
This announcement follows a similar move by Maersk, the Danish ocean carrier, which in May imposed new peak season surcharges (PSS) for shipments from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to The Gambia. These surcharges reflect the growing strain on shipping logistics and the need for carriers to manage additional costs brought about by port congestion.
The congestion at the Banjul port has been attributed to various factors, including increased shipping traffic, inadequate infrastructure, and logistical inefficiencies. The port, which serves as a vital gateway for imports and exports in The Gambia, has been struggling to keep up with the rising demand, leading to delays and additional operational costs for shipping companies.
Local businesses and importers are advised to account for these additional charges in their shipping plans to avoid unexpected costs and delays. The surcharge will impact the overall cost of goods, potentially affecting prices in the local market.
Efforts to address the congestion issues at the Banjul port are ongoing, with the Gambian government and port authorities exploring measures to improve infrastructure and streamline operations. However, in the short term, the surcharges by major carriers like CMA CGM and Maersk highlight the urgent need for effective solutions to alleviate the congestion and ensure smooth trade flows.
As the global shipping industry continues to navigate challenges posed by congestion and peak season demands, stakeholders in The Gambia will need to remain vigilant and adapt to the evolving logistics landscape. The introduction of these surcharges serves as a reminder of the interconnected nature of global trade and the importance of efficient port operations in supporting economic growth.
