Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – The National Assembly of The Gambia’s Committee on Defense and Security has expressed deep concerns over the rising number of crimes and illegal drug activities in the country. In a statement read by Deputy Speaker Seedy SK Njie, the committee highlighted the alarming escalation of crime and the rampant trade and circulation of illicit drugs, describing the situation as a threat to the safety and well-being of citizens and residents.
The committee noted that The Gambia has become a farming, transit, and storage hub for various illicit substances, including Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Resin, Cocaine, Tramadol, and Ecstasy. These substances, originating from both source countries and neighboring regions, infiltrate the country through various channels, posing a significant risk to national security, safety, and stability.
The statement also highlighted the disturbing surge in killings, murders, rapes, aggravated assaults, and attacks on the lives and property of civilians. The committee called for urgent attention and decisive action to address these atrocities.
The proliferation of illicit drugs within communities was emphasized as a grave threat, particularly to the youth, fueling addiction and tearing families apart. The committee urged all stakeholders, especially security agencies, to redouble their efforts in safeguarding the security and sanctity of the nation.
The Gambia Police Force, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Armed Forces, and other security units were called upon to intensify their vigilance and cooperation to combat crime and drug trafficking effectively.
