Court Orders State Representation for Man Accused of Gruesome Attack on Wife

Gorguie Sowe

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – Justice Ebrima Jaiteh of the High Court has mandated the National Agency for Legal Aid (NALA) to provide legal representation for Gorguie Sowe, also known as Yugo Sowe, who is facing charges of attempted murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm, intentional harm, wounding, and domestic violence. The accused allegedly attacked his wife with a cutlass, inflicting severe injuries to her hands and legs.

The incident, which occurred on November 15, 2023, in Jalambang village, Kombo Central, West Coast Region, resulted in serious harm to the victim. The Attorney General’s Chambers has since brought five charges against Sowe before the High Court.

During the proceedings, State Counsels Abibatou Jarra and F. Drammeh represented the Attorney General, pressing charges that Sowe attempted to cause the death of his wife by hacking her with a cutlass, resulting in fatal injuries to her legs, arms, and other body parts. The prosecution further alleged that Sowe unlawfully assaulted his wife with the intent to cause disfigurement or disability, and domestically violated her, causing grievous harm.

Justice Jaiteh, noting that the accused could not afford legal representation, invoked Section 24 (3) of the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia, ordering the Principal Registrar of the High Court to transmit the bill of indictment and amended information to NALA for the accused’s legal representation.

The case has been adjourned to April 23, 2024, at 10:30 am for plea taking, as the legal process unfolds in this harrowing case.
