Gambiaj.com – (FARAFENNI – The Gambia) – In a show of unity and commitment to regional security, the Gambia and Senegal Armed Forces conducted a three-day joint security patrol, covering 30 border villages around the Kerr Ali border in the Gambia’s North Bank region. The patrol, which concluded over the weekend, was launched with a parade at the GRA Kerr Ali office in Farafenni, witnessed by local communities, political officials of the two countries and the media.
This joint operation follows a security agreement signed last year in Ziguinchor, aimed at strengthening cross-border surveillance and enhancing security cooperation between the two nations. The initiative marks a historic first for the Gambia Armed Forces, as they teamed up with their Senegalese counterparts to carry out this extensive border patrol.
Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahima Krubaly, commanding officer of the 2nd Infantry Battalion at Farafeni Barracks, reflected on the operation’s origins. “For the first time in history, the Gambia Armed Forces joined with the Senegalese Armed Forces to conduct a joint patrol. This was initiated last year when the leadership of both armed forces met in Ziguinchor to discuss nurturing bilateral cooperation between our two countries. What we are witnessing today is the culmination of this joint patrol, which began on Tuesday as the first phase of our agreed discussions. Over 30 villages along our shared border were patrolled by these gallant men and women in uniform,” said Lt. Col. Krubaly.
The joint patrol represents a significant milestone in fostering closer ties between the Gambia and Senegal. It underscores the commitment of both countries to work collaboratively towards maintaining peace and security in the region. The successful completion of the operation not only highlighted the professionalism and dedication of the soldiers involved but also emphasized the importance of cross-border collaboration in addressing security challenges.
Ibrahima Fall, Deputy Governor of Senegal’s Kaolack region, lauded the success of the patrol, stating, “The success of this joint patrol is stunning proof of our shared homeland. It shows that when faced with challenges, we are stronger than any boundaries.”
Lamin Saidykhan, Governor of the Gambia’s North Bank Region, also emphasized the patrol’s significance, noting that it was essential for fostering collaboration, enhancing security, and protecting lives and property. “Together, we aim to halt cross-border crimes and create a safe environment for all. Gambia and Senegal share more than just tropical proximity,” Governor Saidykhan said.
The joint patrol has been well-received by residents in the North Bank Region, who believe that such initiatives will help deter illegal activities and cross-border crime, thereby creating safer communities along the border. Governor Saidykhan expressed his gratitude to the leaders and armed forces of both nations for their continued commitment to regional security, acknowledging the support of Gambian President Adama Barrow and Senegalese Minister Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The joint patrol has set a precedent for future security operations, symbolizing unity and cooperation between the Gambia and Senegal in their shared mission to ensure peace and stability along their borders.
