Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A devastating fire erupted at The Gambia’s Naval Command in Banjul on Friday evening, leaving two dead and four others injured after a fuel tanker exploded while delivering supplies. The incident, which occurred around 18:30 local time, sent shockwaves through the area as thick plumes of smoke rose from the military base.
According to a statement from the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), the blaze broke out while a fuel tanker belonging to Jah Oil Company was offloading its monthly supply for the navy. Initial reports indicate that one Gambian Navy rating identified as Richard Mendy lost his life, while two of his colleagues, LS Lamin Jarjue, and PO Sainey Jarjue sustained injuries. Additionally, an unnamed Jah Oil driver died while his assistant sustained serious burns.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. When contacted, the police spokesperson could not confirm or deny specific details surrounding the incident.
In a statement, GAF expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and those affected, while wishing a swift recovery to the injured. The military assured the public that a full investigation is underway, and further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
