Gambiaj.com – (Jenoi, LRR) – The Department of Agriculture (DoA) has initiated a five-day training program for 40 newly recruited staff to introduce them to Climate Smart Agriculture Technologies. Funded by the Gambia Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), the training is a vital step in ensuring that these employees, many of whom are new to the civil service, are equipped with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to the country’s agricultural sector.

Held at the Agricultural Rural Farmers Training Center in Jenoi, Lower River Region (LRR), the program focuses on sustainable farming practices, water management techniques, and the integration of technology in agriculture. These topics are essential to modernizing farming operations in The Gambia, where the government is keen on improving productivity while promoting environmental sustainability.

The training will also include sessions on the Public Service Commission regulation and the general orders of the public service of The Gambia. This aims to familiarize the new staff with the civil service structure, ensuring they understand the regulations and protocols guiding their roles within the public sector.

A key objective of the training is to ensure that participants gain practical insights into Climate Smart Agriculture. This approach is critical in the face of climate change, which has posed significant challenges to agricultural production in The Gambia. By incorporating these sustainable practices, the Department of Agriculture hopes to not only increase agricultural productivity but also enhance resilience to environmental shifts, ultimately strengthening food security across the country.

Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture say the DoA’s investment in this training underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector. By providing the new staff with both technical knowledge and a strong grounding in public service regulations, the government is laying the groundwork for long-term growth and sustainability in The Gambia’s agriculture sector.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of The Gambia’s economy, and initiatives such as this are crucial in ensuring the sector adapts to the changing environment while continuing to feed the nation.
