Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), has arrested a Gambian national, Dawda Kairaba Jeng, for possession of significant quantities of illicit drugs. Jeng, a 44-year-old resident of Salaji, was apprehended on November 11, 2023, at approximately 9:23 PM GMT during an operation in his neighborhood.

The seized substances included 19 bags of skunk cannabis, 630 sticks of vapors, and 894 sachets of cannabis gums. These drugs, some of which are new entrants to The Gambia’s illicit drug market, are known for their high potency and serious health risks.

Cannabis gum, a synthetic form of cannabis available in various flavors, and vapors, a type of New Psychoactive Substance (NPS), are particularly concerning due to their addictive nature and harmful effects on users’ physical and mental well-being. Skunk cannabis, also part of the haul, is a highly potent strain that poses significant risks to users.

DLEAG issued a statement urging Gambian youth to prioritize their health and future by avoiding drug abuse in all forms. “The abuse of these substances jeopardizes the health and general wellbeing of individuals,” the agency noted, emphasizing its commitment to combating drug trafficking and promoting public awareness about the dangers of illicit drugs.

This arrest underscores the growing challenge posed by synthetic and psychoactive substances in The Gambia. Authorities continue to call on communities to support efforts aimed at eradicating drug abuse and ensuring a safer environment for all.

The investigation into Jeng’s case is ongoing, as DLEAG reiterates its dedication to protecting the country from the threats posed by illicit drugs.
