Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) has announced a record-breaking seizure of more than 400,000 pills of suspected ecstasy following a month-long sting operation targeting drug trafficking networks in the country.
In a statement, the agency said its operatives arrested two Gambian nationals on 16 September 2025 with a cumulative total of 401,767 pills of suspected ecstasy, estimated at a wholesale street value of D40 million.
The first arrest was made at London Corner in Serrekunda around 20:40 GMT, where officers apprehended Fallou Cham with 1,767 pills of suspected ecstasy.
A follow-up investigation led to the discovery of a large-scale storage facility in Sukuta. At the residence, described as a “bunker,” officers seized 11 suitcases containing 80 packets of suspected ecstasy, each holding 5,000 pills.
In addition to the drugs, DLEAG operatives confiscated significant sums of money believed to be linked to the trafficking operation: D967,700, CFA 176,000, and €50,100.
Acting on further leads, the agency arrested Mariama Jawara at her residence in Brufut. According to DLEAG, preliminary investigations suggest the drugs were shipped from Holland, with Mariama allegedly coordinating the operations in The Gambia while her husband, who resides in Holland, is believed to be connected to the shipments.
Both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
DLEAG described the seizure as a “landmark” success in its ongoing efforts to curb the trafficking, dealing, and abuse of ecstasy and other illicit substances in The Gambia.
