The Drug Enforcement Law Agency (DLEAG) in The Gambia has reported significant progress in its efforts to disrupt the illicit flow, trafficking, dealing, and abuse of prohibited and controlled drugs. According to their weekly report, DLEAG operatives stationed across the country registered notable achievements in operational activities.
During the reporting period, the agency recorded thirty-four (34) cases involving forty-one (41) suspects, with the majority being males. Interestingly, an Alleged Child Offender (ACO), a 17-year-old student, was among those apprehended. The suspects comprised twenty-seven (27) Gambians, eleven (11) Sierra Leoneans, one (1) Conakry Guinean, one (1) Bissau Guinean, and one (1) Nigerian.
The seizure statistics for the week showed a significant increase in both cases and arrests compared to the previous period. The number of cases increased from eleven (11) to thirty-four (34), while arrests surged from fourteen (14) to forty-one (41) suspects. Gambians and Sierra Leoneans accounted for the majority of cases and arrests.
The total quantities of drugs seized by DLEAG operatives during the reporting period include cannabis sativa, Kush, Cannabis Resin (Hashish), Tramadol, Ecstasy, and skunk. The drugs were confiscated in various locations across the country, including Banjul, West Coast Regional Command, Kanifing Municipal Command, and the Upper River Regional Command.
In Banjul, three (3) cases involving three (3) suspects were recorded, with the seizure of 15 wraps of kush. The West Coast Regional Command registered fourteen (14) cases involving nineteen (19) suspects, with the seizure of various drugs including cannabis sativa, hashish, kush, tramadol, and ecstasy. Kanifing Municipal Command registered eleven (11) cases involving thirteen (13) suspects, with the seizure of cannabis sativa, kush, ecstasy, and hashish. The Upper River Regional Command recorded one (1) case involving one (1) suspect, with the seizure of cannabis sativa and hashish.
The Sensitive Investigations Unit (SIU) also registered five (5) cases involving five (5) suspects, with the seizure of ecstasy, skunk, kush, and cannabis sativa.
Overall, the DLEAG’s efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse are yielding positive results, with significant seizures and arrests made across various regions of The Gambia.
