Gambiaj.com – (BUSUMBALA, The Gambia) – Dr. Demba Sabally, a prominent member of the National People’s Party (NPP), has issued a stark warning to his fellow militants in Busumbala. Speaking at a political event honoring Ramou Sabally, another key NPP figure, Dr. Sabally cautioned that peace would be elusive for Gambians should the United Democratic Party (UDP) ascend to power.
Ramou Sabally, previously a well-known member of the UDP, has successfully recruited 150 women from the UDP and other political parties to join the NPP. This recruitment drive was celebrated at the event, which underscored the ongoing political shifts within the Busumbala Constituency.
Dr. Sabally did not mince words about the potential consequences of a UDP-led government. “If UDP comes to power, they will go after you even when you break a nut open,” he warned. Highlighting what he perceives as a lack of legalistic and peace-oriented ideology within the UDP, he referenced a statement made by UDP leader Ousainou Darboe. “UDP leader Ousainou Darboe said at his news conference that he will call on his people to combat violence with violence. A serious leader would never say that. That will only plunge a country into disarray. If they gain power, they will deal with you violently. You will never know peace,” Dr. Sabally asserted.
NPP campaign chief Lamin Cham echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the UDP poses a direct threat to the political career of Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda. Bensouda, who has rapidly risen within the UDP to become the chief coordinator of party events and a potential successor to Ousainou Darboe, was warned by Cham about the internal dangers within his own party.
“I want to tell Talib Bensouda that he does not know what kind of group he is in,” Cham stated. He implied that Bensouda’s association with certain UDP narratives was a strategic move to undermine him. “They’re attempting to ruin you. You will no longer be eligible for marketing in this nation once they have finished demeaning you. Since you’re still young, you should use caution when speaking,” Cham advised.
Cham’s remarks appeared to reference President Adama Barrow’s previous comments suggesting that UDP political offices nationwide would become Narrs’ shops. These comments were seen by UDP members as derogatory towards Talib Bensouda’s Narr heritage.
As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2026 elections, the rivalry between the UDP and NPP continues to intensify, with both parties vying for influence and control in The Gambia.
