Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – Paulo Djabi, who faces 15 criminal charges including money laundering and drug-related offenses, has requested the court’s permission to travel for medical reasons. Justice Achibonga had previously prohibited Djabi from leaving The Gambia before granting him bail.
In his application, Djabi cited persistent abdominal pain, particularly on his left side, which he had been managing with painkillers during his three-month custody. After his release, he underwent various medical check-ups and was diagnosed with a left kidney stone with hydronephrosis Secondary, requiring treatment at the Kanifing General Hospital.
Djabi expressed concern that his health condition could significantly deteriorate without intervention, affecting both his health and business. Despite assurances of not absconding, supported by sufficient bail bonds and business interests in The Gambia, the State Lawyers opposed his application.
The State’s opposition, represented by Attorney General Chambers through Counsel Lamin Jarju, was based on an affidavit filed on April 12, 2024. However, Djabi’s defense, represented by Counsel Kadijatou Jallow, claimed not to have received the document. Counsel Jarju then provided a copy of the application in court.
The court granted Counsel Jallow time to review the State’s opposition, adjourning the case to May 14, 2024, for further hearing on Djabi’s application.
