Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – In a vibrant display of community spirit, ECOMIG, in collaboration with the Gambian Defence and Security Forces (GDSF), officially launched a month-long Breast Cancer Awareness campaign in Greater Banjul on October 4, 2024. The event kicked off with a spirited route march through the city’s main streets, bringing together participants from various sectors, including the ECOWAS Permanent Mission.
The campaign aims to raise critical awareness about breast cancer, a pressing health issue in The Gambia, where the disease carries a daunting 50% mortality rate. Following the march, the official launch ceremony took place at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, attended by dignitaries and community leaders.
Major Eunice Holman of ECOMIG, co-chair of the planning committee, welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of the campaign. Her Excellency Miatta Lily French, the Head of Mission for ECOMIG, delivered a keynote statement highlighting the need for increased awareness and education regarding breast cancer.
The event featured an informative lecture by the Medical Officer from the Nigerian Company (NIGCOY 9) on breast cancer and its associated challenges. Volunteers from NIGCOY, the Gambia Police Force, and the Gambia Fire Department conducted demonstrations on self-breast examination in multiple languages, including English, Wolof, and Mandinka, to ensure the message reaches diverse communities.
Throughout October, the campaign will continue with various activities, including sensitization programs, awareness campaigns, and screenings targeted at GDSF personnel, prison inmates, and communities in Bakau, Yundum, Brikama, Barra, and Kanfenda. This initiative represents a concerted effort to combat breast cancer through education, community engagement, and proactive health measures.
