Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – The National Nutrition Agency in The Gambia has secured funding from The ECOWAS Commission to aid the most affected households in the 2022 flash floods. The cash support aims to improve the nutritional status of these households.
The selection of beneficiaries was based on a situational report published by The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), which ranked districts according to their severity levels. Out of the total 7,076 affected households, 3,140 were targeted and enrolled based on available resources.
The criteria for selection included households that were completely damaged, households with physically challenged individuals, female-headed households, households with members over 65 years old, households with children under five, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and households with more than eight people.
Activities leading to the cash support included rapid nutrition assessments, engagement with municipal, regional, and district authorities, and sensitization of community leaders and members about the grant and its eligibility criteria.
The funds are being managed by a local NGO, The Gambia Food and Nutrition Association. The National Nutrition Agency did not however stated the total amount secured from the ECOWAS Commission and, approximately, how much money would be given per household.
