Gambiaj.com – (ABUJA, Nigeria) – At the 2024 ECOWAS Parliament’s First Ordinary Session in Abuja, The Gambia’s delegation presented a comprehensive Country Report detailing significant achievements in economic growth, youth development, climate resilience, and macroeconomic convergence.
Led by Representative Billay Tunkara, the five-member delegation showcased the government’s positive outcomes, emphasizing the country’s dedication to sustainable development and regional cooperation. The report highlighted that The Gambia experienced a remarkable 4.8% economic growth in 2023, with projections indicating a rise to 5.4% in 2024.
“The Gambian economy has demonstrated its strength and resilience,” the report stated. “Our commitment to macroeconomic convergence, particularly in curbing central bank financing of the fiscal deficit and bolstering external reserves, underscores our dedication to regional integration within ECOWAS.”
Youth empowerment was another key focus of the report. The government has equipped 745 youths with life skills and certified 32 trainers in SME development methodologies. “Youth empowerment is pivotal to the nation’s progress,” the report emphasized.
In response to the urgent threat of climate change, the Gambian government has intensified efforts in sustainable environmental management, climate action, and disaster preparedness. “We are resolutely committed to mitigating climate change impacts and building a resilient future,” the delegation affirmed.
The Gambia’s delegation included Representatives Alhagie Darbo, Maimuna Ceesay, Amadou, and Sheriff Sarr, who collectively reinforced the nation’s commitment to peace, security, and development within the ECOWAS region.
This presentation at the ECOWAS Parliament suggestively highlights The Gambia’s strides in economic and social progress, setting a positive precedent for continued growth and regional cooperation.
