Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The judiciary has been bolstered with the appointment of three new judges to serve in the High Court of The Gambia. The appointments, announced through a press release from the Office of the Chief Justice, were made under Section 138(2) of the Gambian Constitution. This decision follows the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission, underscoring the ongoing efforts to enhance the judicial system in the country.
Among the newly appointed judges are Mr. Omar Cham, who currently serves as the Master of the High Court, Ms. Yakarr H. Cox, a Principal State Counsel at the Ministry of Justice, and Mr. Omar Suso, a Senior Legal Officer and Deputy Executive Secretary at the National Agency for Legal Aid (NALA). Their diverse backgrounds and experiences are expected to bring valuable expertise to the High Court.
These appointments will take effect in October 2024, marking a significant expansion in the court’s capacity. The addition of these judges is seen as a strategic move to address the increasing demands on the judiciary and to ensure the efficient administration of justice in The Gambia.
The Judiciary has expressed optimism regarding the new appointments, stating that it looks forward to the assumption of office by the newly appointed judges and wishes them a successful tenure. The bolstering of the High Court’s capacity comes at a crucial time, as The Gambia continues to navigate various legal challenges and reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law in the country.
This development highlights President Barrow’s commitment to reinforcing the judicial system, which is vital for upholding justice and maintaining public confidence in the legal processes of The Gambia.
