The Gambia Ferry Service Management has announced the temporary suspension of ferry services between Banjul and Barra. This decision comes as the Kanilai Ferry has been withdrawn from service for urgent repair works, effective immediately.
Both ferries servicing the route are currently undergoing maintenance, leading to the complete halt of ferry operations until further notice. Travelers, especially vehicular operators, are advised to utilize the Senegambia Bridge as an alternative route during this period.
In the press statement issued to the media, the Ferry Service management states that it “Assures the public that every effort is being made to expedite the repair works and restore the ferry service as soon as possible. The temporary closure is aimed at ensuring safer and more reliable ferry operations in the future.”
The Gambia Ferry Service Management deeply regrets any inconvenience caused and solicits the understanding and cooperation of the general public during this period.
On Friday early morning, the Kanilai ferry, which departed from Banjul en route to Barra, suffered engine breakdown and began floating adrift at sea leaving it unable to reach its intended destination. It took over eight hours for the Navy to rescue the stranded passengers.
Meanwhile, both the Kunta Kinteh and Johe ferries have remained docked for weeks after they developed serious engine problems that are yet to be fixed.
